Hijabs & Helmets – Program Support

 

About Access Alliance:
Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services is a multi-service community agency that works to improve health outcomes for the most vulnerable immigrants, refugees, and their communities. We do this by facilitating access to services and addressing systemic barriers and poverty. The Centre envisions a future in which Toronto’s diverse communities achieve health with dignity.

Focus area: Community Service Programs

Volunteer Position Description: The ‘Hijabs & Helmets’ project is intended to serve refugee and immigrant communities. It engages and recruits Hijabi people and their allies to promote cycling as a recreational activity. The program also puts emphasis on raising the participants’ leadership skills and training them to combat racism, hate and micro-aggressions that are rampant against visible minorities.

Tasks:

  • Assist with outreach events, helps with set-ups, attendance keeping and tabling at local community events.
  • Provide support with organizing and implementing weekly group rides.
  • Assist with facilitating info sessions and relevant skill-building workshops.
  • Contributing to an inclusive environment encouraging participants to try new things.
  • Helping others learn and develop confidence when riding bikes.

Location: Access Point on Danforth – 3079 Danforth Ave.

Time Commitment: Weekly
All Shifts:

  • Tuesdays 3-5
  • Thursdays 5-7

Format: In-person

Qualification and Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be 13 years old or older
  • Experience riding a bike (i.e., riding for recreation or for commuting)

Skills Required:

  • Some experience working within the community development/non-profit sector as a volunteer, placement student or intern is an asset.
  • Commitment to work from an integrated anti-oppression framework.
  • Able to work outdoor in various weather conditions
  • Comfortable working independently and in a team environment.
