Student Practicums
Our Centre offers meaningful research practicum opportunities for students as a way to train the next generation to become champions for CBR and equity. As part of their practicum placements, students engage in research, knowledge translation and/or advocacy focused projects that are of shared interest for the student and our Centre.
The flexibility of practicum often allows students (and our Centre) to boldly take on projects that are under-explored but of critical importance. For example, our study on Food Insecurity was led by three practicum students, Aysha Butt, Brooke Campus, and Zahra Mamdani. Similarly, a team of three students, Jaitra, Kathleen, and Elizabeth, are leading another study focused on best practices for doing research with refugee communities.
We host graduate students from various disciplines including social work, immigration and settlement studies, public health, health studies, health promotion and geography and planning.
Typically, we also look for students with some of the following skills and experience:
- understanding of, and passionate about, issues affecting low income, multilingual, racialized newcomers, immigrants and refugees
- strong written and verbal communication skills
- ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
- knowledge of basic research and evaluation principles and methods
- strong problem-solving, organizational and time management skills
All students participate in an orientation and have an opportunity to attend training workshops on a range of topics. All students are expected to demonstrate a commitment to working within an integrated anti-oppression framework.
