Community Health Worker
About Access Alliance:
Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services is a multi-service community agency that works to improve health outcomes for the most vulnerable immigrants, refugees, and their communities. Position Title: Community Health Worker
Placement Type (In-person / Virtual / Hybrid): In-person
Number of Positions Available: 1
Worksite Location and Conditions:
- The student will work in an office setting with assigned workspace and computer
- Student needs to be fully vaccinated, pass a criminal reference check etc.
- Ability to travel to Access Alliance location – Jane site (761 Jane St, York, ON M6N 4B4)
Brief Description of Practicum Project:
Provide assistance and support to the planning and coordination of programs, services and events related to poverty reduction portfolio
- Advocate for and support the development of initiatives that promote community health and well-being, particularly in relation to poverty reduction efforts
- Support administrative aspects of programs, including registrations, permission forms, attendance, report writing, evaluations, program documentation
- Conduct outreach to the community, provide information, and promote programs and activities.
- Work with team and with other departments to provide collaborative programming
- Provide non-judgmental, inclusive support to program participants
Learning Outcomes/Goals:
The student will develop the following competencies in the following areas:
- Understand the importance of advocating for policies that support community health
- Evidence-informed Program Planning
- Promote community empowerment and capacity building of individuals and communities
- Understand the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to community health
- Conduct needs assessment and environmental scan to identify priorities
- Collect sensitive quantitative and qualitative data from vulnerable population and analysis skills
- Professional communication skills and teamwork
- Work in a unionized environment adopting an anti-oppression, equity, and inclusion framework
Qualifications/Competencies Required:
- Post-secondary education in any discipline of health sciences or equivalent at University (E.g. MPH, MHE)
- Interest in working in community-based organizations
- Experience working with families and children 6-12 years and community development background an assets
- An understanding of social determinants of health and issues faced by vulnerable communities
- Experience working with ethno culturally diverse populations in Toronto
- Computer proficiency, including word processing, internet, spreadsheets, MS office, publisher, PowerPoint
- Ability to think innovatively to promote programs utilizing Canva or other graphic design tools is an asset
- Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of team
- Demonstrate problem-solving, organizational and time management skills
- Ability to communicate any of the priority languages (e.g., Tigrinya, Portuguese, and Spanish) will be an asset
Benefits to the Student:
The student will learn about community-based programs, strategies, and advocacies addressing poverty reduction. Student will have an opportunity to develop organizational, communication, and leadership skills. They will foster a sense of community and collective responsibility for well-being. They will learn how to work in an interdisciplinary team in a unionized organization.
