Bike Hub Assistant

About Access Alliance:

Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services is a multi-service community agency that works to improve health outcomes for the most vulnerable immigrants, refugees, and their communities. We do this by facilitating access to services and addressing systemic inequities. The Centre envisions a future in which Toronto’s diverse communities achieve health with dignity.

The Scarborough Cycles program currently operates two community bike hubs.

 

Position Title: Bike Hub Assistant

Placement Type (In-person / Virtual / Hybrid): In-person

Number of Positions Available: 1-2

 

Worksite Location and Conditions:

  • Locations: 3079 Danforth Ave (Danforth Ave and Victoria Park Ave) and 3939 Lawrence Ave E (Lawrence Ave E and Markham Rd)
  • The student will work in a bike hub setting and occasionally outdoors
  • Student needs to be fully vaccinated and pass a criminal reference check

 

Brief Description of Practicum Project:

Our Scarborough Cycles community bike hub offers access to bicycles, tools, a do-it-yourself repair space, workshops, group rides, a bike mentorship program for newcomers, and civic engagement opportunities for residents.

The Bike Hub Assistant works alongside our staff and works directly with the public. The Assistant is passionate about helping others, strengthening the local community, and enjoys the outdoors. 

 

Learning Outcomes/Goals:

The student will develop the following competencies in the following areas:

(i) Hands-on skills development

(ii)On-the-ground community development exposure/experience  

 

Qualifications/Competencies Required:

  • Self-starter mentality
  • Continually seeks to implement theory into practice by working directly in the community
  • Patient and strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Comfortable working both independently and in a team environment
  • Able to work outside and lift 25 pounds
  • Experience with commuting by bike, bike repair and/or mechanical knowledge is helpful, but not required
  • Critical data analysis and report writing, experience with Canva is also an asset

The program is part of the City’s Community Reduce & Reuse Program, which reduces waste and builds sustainable communities by:

  • Providing opportunities to reuse, share and repair items
  • Offering skills training and creating job and economic opportunities
  • Creating spaces for community members to gather

This program promotes cycling culture and waste diversion by repairing bicycles that would have otherwise become scrap metal or gone to landfill.  

 

Placement Period:

  • September 2025 – December 2025
