Communications & Design Student Placement

Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services is a community health centre that works to improve health outcomes for immigrants, refugees, and their communities. We do this by providing inclusive healthcare services and community programs, and advocating for health equity. Position Title: Communications & Design Student Placement

Placement Type (In-person / Virtual / Hybrid): In-person

Number of Positions Available: 1

Worksite Location and Conditions:

  • The student will work in an office setting with assigned workspace and computer.
  • Student needs to be fully vaccinated, pass a criminal reference check, etc.
  • The position is based at our College site (340 College Street), but occasional travel may be required to our Danforth and/or Jane locations.

 

Brief Description of Practicum Project:

  • Contribute to community engagement initiatives by developing impactful, community-focused content to inspire volunteers, community members, donors, service partners and allies.
  • Assist in health promotion communications and social action campaigns by curating visuals and designing compelling content as needed.
  • Support the organization’s advocacy efforts by contributing to campaigns aimed at driving policy change.
  • Provide general support to department staff and assist with various tasks as required.
  • Participate in communications capacity-building initiatives, including delivering training and coaching sessions.

 

Learning Outcomes/Goals:

The student will develop competencies in the following areas:

  • Applied learned communications, health promotion and community engagement strategies to real-world projects addressing the social determinants of health
  • Hone communications and design skills to build effective campaigns (key skills include creative storytelling, writing, design, campaign planning, creation, and evaluation, audience segmentation and targeted digital marketing)
  • Improve and develop workshop facilitation and coaching skills
  • Develop a solid understanding of how a community health centre engages its communities and effects system changes

 

Qualifications/Competencies Required:

  • 3rd-year (or later) post-secondary or graduate diploma student in communications, marketing, graphic design, journalism, public health, or a related field
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing social determinants of health of marginalized communities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated graphic design skills
  • Familiarity with various social media platforms—primarily Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook
  • Skilled with MS Office applications, and graphics tools such as Canva
  • Interest in health care and/or not-for-profit sector
  • Understanding of newcomer population’s needs and barriers is a strong asset
  • Ability to work independently and as part of team
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational and time management skills

Placement Period:

Fall 2026: September to December (dates are flexible) – The placement prioritizes students who can commit to both Fall and Winter semesters but a single-semester placement is also possible.
