Sustainable Living Student Placement

Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services is a multi-service community agency that works to improve health outcomes for the most vulnerable immigrants, refugees, and their communities. Position Title: Sustainable Living Student Placement
Placement Type (In-person / Virtual / Hybrid): In-person
Number of Positions Available: 2
Worksite Location and Conditions:
- Student will work on site: Access Point on Danforth rooftop garden, in an office setting, in the wider community(ravine, hydro corridor, community garden)
- Student must do a criminal/vulnerable sector check
- Student should be comfortable with the outdoors in all weather conditions
- Student will work in an office setting with assigned workspace and computer
- Student needs to be fully vaccinated, pass a criminal reference check etc.
Brief Description of Practicum Project:
- This position will assist and support Health Promoter with Green Access Program initiatives related to ecological food growing, land access and food security;
- Student will Participate in planning and implementation of Green Access programs, support community development work through multiple forms of outreach work;
- Potential participation in local network meetings. Communicate and collaborate with community members and promote collaboration and community capacity building;
- Assist with content creation: audiovisual, social media, pictures.
Learning Outcomes/Goals:
The student will develop the following competencies in the following areas:
- Evidence-informed Program Planning;
- Quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis skills;
- Develop current and new skills including communication, networking, interpersonal and technical abilities in the health, environmental and community services field;
- Professional communication skills and teamwork;
- Working in a unionized environment adopting an anti-oppression, equity, and inclusion framework.
Qualifications/Competencies Required:
- Post-secondary education in any discipline of Environmental studies, environmental science, urban agriculture or equivalent at University/ College;
- Experience with working (or interest in) with ethno culturally diverse populations in Toronto;
- Excellent computer skills, including ability to use Microsoft Office Suites, with intermediate level skills working with audio visual applications;
- Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills;
- Ability to work independently and as part of team;
- Demonstrated problem-solving, organizational and time management skills;
- Ability to travel to Access Alliance locations on College and Danforth;
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
- Able to work outdoors in most weather conditions including : rain, heat and humidity, wind;
- Comfortable working around non-human life including bees, wasps, butterflies, moths, birds etc.;
- Demonstrated commitment to working from an anti-oppression perspective;
- Able to work both individually and as part of a team;
- Able to effectively manage time in order to complete workload accordingly.
Benefits to the Student:
The student will have the opportunity to link academic study and theory. Practice existing key skills and learn new ones. Learn critical reflection as a means of self-development while applying problem solving in a real work environment.
