Food Services Worker/Cook

Short Description:

Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services (AAMHCS) is a Community Health Centre that aims to provide services and addresses system inequities to improve health outcomes for the most vulnerable immigrants, refugees, and their communities. The Centre envisions a future in which Toronto’s diverse communities achieve health with dignity.

Working closely with staff, the Cook will ensure that the kitchen, equipment and inventory are accessible and available in addition to maintaining appropriate health and safety measures. This role will be responsible for the preparation of nutritious meals for our congregate dining programs with the support of community volunteers and students.

The successful candidate will possess strong skills and knowledge in cooking and nutrition, experience facilitating diverse groups, and a desire to use food as a way to build community.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan healthy menus for 50+ people three times per week, including managing weekly inventory and purchasing
  • Lead a team of volunteers in cooking of the meals
  • Ensure program food is prepared and organized to meet program needs
  • Assist with kitchen clean-up as required
  • Ensure kitchen and equipment are kept clean following appropriate infection control and food handling procedures as per Toronto Public Health guidelines
  • Ensure kitchen equipment and items are organized and stored safely in designated areas and function effectively and safely
  • Conduct daily monitoring of fridge and freezer temperatures
  • Inform management of equipment malfunctions or safety hazards
  • Any other job specific responsibilities assigned by the supervisor

Skills and Qualifications:

Qualifications and Experience

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience
  • Food Handler Certification is required
  • Certification as Food Handler Trainer is an asset
  • Minimum 1 year of experience cooking meals for groups of 50 -150 people

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of nutrition and healthy cooking to meet the needs of communities served
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, especially in a volunteer/community development context
  • Ability to work within a set budget
  • Ability to plan menus with existing groceries
  • Physical ability to lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and be very effective in a team environment
  • Strong creative problem-solving skills

Salary: $37,904 – $45,925

Hours: Part–time, 21 hours/week

Duration: 12 Months

Bargaining Unit position: United Food and Commercial Workers, Local 175

Classification: Secretary
