Community Healthcare Assistant

Position Title: Community Healthcare Assistant
Placement Type: In-person
Number of Positions Available: 2-3
Worksite Location and Conditions:
- Location: 91 Barrington Ave, East York, ON M4C 4Y9
- The student will work in a community setting
- Student needs to be fully vaccinated, pass a criminal reference check etc.
Brief Description of Practicum Project:
Working in a community setting, student will interact and participate in the Healthy Child Screening events with parents of children 2-6 years age. There will be 5 screening events throughout the months of April and May 2024. Students will work under the supervision of a Family Resource Program Worker.
Learning Outcomes/Goals:
The student will develop the following competencies in the following areas:
(i)Critical thinking
(ii)Research and Communication
(iii)Professional communication skills and teamwork
(iv)Working in a unionized environment adopting an anti-oppression, equity, and inclusion framework
Qualifications/Competencies Required:
- Currently enrolled in 2nd or 3rd year in a Nursing program at a University level;
- Model health and safety practices;
- Able to interact new comer and low-income families with children 2-6 years old;
- Able to provide resources to parents;
- Experience with working with ethno culturally diverse populations in Toronto;
- Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills;
- Ability to work independently and as part of team;
- Demonstrated problem-solving, organizational and time management skills;
- Ability to communicate any of the priority languages (e.g., Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, Bengali, etc.) will be an asset;
- Ability to travel to event locations
Benefits to the Student:
- The student will learn learning to interact and communicate with new comer families and non-new comer families in community setting.
- They will learn how to promote health and wellness to families and to early identify developmental challenges within children 2-6 years of age.
- They will learn how to work in a team in a unionized organization.
