Student Placements and Mentorship
Students play an important role in our research and evaluation work. The research department typically hosts students over the course of the year. We have hosted graduate and undergraduate students from various disciplines including social work, immigration and settlement studies, health studies, health promotion and geography. Students are recognized as a valued and important part of helping to further Access Alliance strategic directions.
All students participate in an orientation and have an opportunity to attend training workshops on a range of topics. Past placement students told us that they learn a lot about newcomer health issues and that they value the hands-on experience they get.
All students are expected to demonstrate a commitment to working within an integrated anti-oppression framework. Typically, we also look for students with some of the following skills and experience:
- understanding of issues affecting low income, multilingual, racialized newcomers, immigrants and refugees
- strong written and verbal communication skills (with individuals and groups)
- ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
- knowledge of basic research and evaluation principles and methods
- strong problem-solving, organizational and time management skills
