Family Support

The Neighbourhood Centre has been serving children and their families for over 40 years. The agency began when a group of community members wanted to provide support and services to the influx of young families moving into a group of new high-rise apartment buildings in the Barrington-Secord-Eastdale-Lumsden area. At that time, in the late 1960’s, there were no recreational facilities, or programs for children and youth.

Neighbourhood Centre provides playgroups for children 0-6 years old and workshops for parents/caregivers. We work with the City of Toronto, Secord Elementary School, Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation, Toronto Public Health and other partners to offer weekly and monthly Playgroups and workshops. Our aim is to connect parents, build skills and promote healthy family bonds. Our workshops and playgroups reflect community needs and requests and address subjects such as Family Literacy, Play and Recreation, Parental Self Care, Positive Discipline, Food and Nutrition support, and Community Development. We also run special programs on PA Days during March Break and the Summer Break.

Some examples:

  • Parent & Child Yoga
  • CPR Training
  • Crafting: Sewing, Knitting and Jewellery
  • Parent/Caregiver Chat
  • Toronto Public Health workshops; Nobody’s Perfect, Incredible Years, Living and Learning with Baby

Everyone is welcome. Most programs are free.

During the holidays we work with community and corporate partners on our Holiday Hamper Program. If you are interested in helping, we are always looking for more volunteers.
