Interpretation Services

R.I.O (Remote Interpretation Ontario) Network

An initiative of AALS, R.I.O provides high quality, immediate over-the-phone interpretation (OPI) using trained and qualified interpreters in more than 170 languages, 24/7 days at non-profit rates.

Face-to-face interpretation

Our interpreters go to your workplace to interpret for your staff, clients and their families. Consecutive interpretation is most common in this setting.

Home visit interpretation

Our interpreters meet your staff at a client’s home to interpret for your staff, clients and their families. Consecutive interpretation is most common in this setting.

Group interpretation

An interpreter can assist you by interpreting encounters that involve a number of people, for example at a case conference including one or more service providers, the client and the clients’ family. The interpreter may use a combination of consecutive and simultaneous interpreting. Our interpreters also work in facilitated groups such as a diabetes education class or a town hall meeting. This setting often calls for a combination of consecutive and simultaneous interpreting.

Consecutive interpreting: The interpreter waits until the speaker has finished and then interprets what has been said.

Simultaneous interpreting: The interpreter listens to the speaker and interprets while the speaker is still talking.

Telephone message relay

Call our interpreter service if you have a message that you wish to pass on to a client with limited or no English. Our interpreters will communicate your message in the language of the client.

Conference calls

Our interpreters are available to interpret a conversation between a health care provider and a patient over the telephone.
