Volunteer Stories
Finding Friends Digital Story
Congratulations to Access Alliance volunteer, Ranjith Kulatilake, for creating a wonderful digital story about his experience as a volunteer! It was among eight to be shown at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on International Volunteer Day (December 5th) as part of Volunteer Toronto’s SharedTime Initiative.
Ranjith Kulatilake, an immigrant from Sri Lanka, has been a volunteer at Access Alliance for the past five years. He is a founding volunteer of Among Friends, a three-year initiative to improve access to public services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ) refugees and immigrants in Toronto.
Ranjith's story describes his journey as a new immigrant to Canada after fleeing his home country due to sexual persecution. It is a story about building new friendships amongst others facing similar challenges and dealing with the stigma of homosexuality within his community.
This story is Ranjith’s tribute to Carlos, a delighful gay man whom Canada lost (you will see why!), and to their friends at Among Friends.
